Watching and waiting

The rainy season has definitely started. There are 2 seasons in Hawaii: Warm and Less Warm. May clearly began the warm season and with it came the rain. It rains almost daily, usually starting about 3:00 pm. This of course is great for the tropical jungle in our area. However, absent a roof on the house, it means the downstairs gets filled with water and Judy and Mike are regular rain water removers from the downstairs. A good wet/dry vacuum, with the filter removed, does an excellent job. We are trying to prevent mold and mildew getting into the walls downstairs. And, with the water on the floor, spending time building the climbing wall downstairs is not part of the program.

So, when will the roof be put on the house? We are hoping within the next 2 weeks. Next week the glue lams and the trusses are supposed to arrive. And with them, a boom truck crane will be required to lift and place them where they need to be. We are told 20 glue lams. Quite the project. All this to have open beam ceilings. And, of course, we await the arrival of the siding. At least the Tivek vapor barrier has been installed.

Judy heads to the Bay Area the first week of June. She will have a follow up from her Watchman procedure to make sure everything with that is fine. Plus, she will have a CT scan to evaluate her for a new heart valve. We are hoping all goes well and she will be a candidate to have that done, without open heart surgery, sometime in the fall. Will be nice to have an answer to that issue.

We have done some exploring. It turns out that Hawaiians used to build slides for the royalty called Holuas. The slides went down the mountain on lava and were kept smooth so that an individual could slide down the moutain into the ocean traveling at about 50 mph. Clearly, a dangerous sport. Most of those slides have disappeared, but we went in search of one this past weekend. What we found was a 4 wheel drive only road that even taxes our 4 WD Tacoma. Mike drove very slowly concerned about breaking an axle. We are sure Triple AAA would not rescue us. The most interesting finding is in the picture below. And we never did make it down to the beach to see the slide.

We also found a very nice, peaceful beach this morning, not far north of the airport. A place where we can drive the electric VW Golf to. There is even a rock that people were climbing up on and jumping into the water--not something either of us wanted to try.

We hope all are well. We understand that California has been experiencing unusual May rain. Let's hope that it keeps the fire seaon at bay. And, our oldest grandson turns 16 in 5 days. We are excited for him. A major milestone and we wish him all the best.

Love and good thoughts

Judy and Mike
