Week 8: Happy thanksgiving

This is our first post on a blog. Hopefully, this make it easier for people to read and see pictures. It is not easy setting up a blog--lots of false starts and phone calls with tech support. So, please, give advice and ideas on how to improve the appearance and funcitoning of this blog--it is a work in progress and a real learning challenge.

Hard to believe that thanksgiving is the upcoming week. We are not sure how we will spend the day, but I know we will be thinking of all of you and hoping that you are having a special day celebrating with friends and family.

About the second week we were here, someone keyed our wonderful little VW eGolf. Fortunately, insurance covers most of the repair and this week we finally have gotten the car in for repair. The rental car we have been provided with is a 4 wheel drive small SUV that runs on gas. That means we can go anywhere all over the island. We picked up the car Thursday night.

We have started to meet some people and participate in small hikes. Mike went on a hike with a group on Wednesday; Judy and Mike went on a different hike on Friday, and on Saturday, we drove to the volcano and did a bit of hiking around the Kilauea volcano caldera.   (Pictures are attached--we hope).  We also visited South Point:  the south most point, not only of the island, but of the entire United States. Can't get any further south and still be in the US. Very rough seas and windy. While the temperature was warm (high 70's), there is no way anyone would want to get into that water.

The preliminary grading of the lots is about finished. Monday (tomorrow) begins the laser work to layout the forms for the foundation.

  2. You are sharing a totally beautiful spot in Hawaiian paradise with Pele. So happy for both of you as you continue on your courageous journey to make the absolute most of your retirement years. You better have a guest bedroom in the plans for your “good friends” when they come so see you! Thank you for sharing this experience with me as you progress along in this adventure. Going to miss both of you at the FRSN holiday dinner but I can see that you have great excuse. 😎

    1. Yes, we have 2 extra bedrooms and bathrooms. Space for friends and family. We are expecting that once complete, everyone we know will come and visit--we hope.
